When to Plant Cucumbers in March 2025: Best Dates and Planting Tips

Cucumbers grown in your own garden are a true delicacy, and there’s always more you can do with them. They can be enjoyed in many ways, whether pickled, frozen, salted, or eaten fresh. To ensure a bountiful harvest, timing your planting is crucial. Using the lunar calendar, this guide will help you determine the best days to plant cucumbers in March 2025.

How to Determine the Best Time to Plant Cucumbers in March 2025

Key Factors to Consider for Growing Cucumbers

Cucumbers are native to hot climates, and they thrive in warm temperatures. Ideally, they need temperatures of around 22-26°C and adequate moisture to grow well. If the temperature drops below 15-18°C, their growth will halt, and they will not produce fruit. Because of these temperature requirements, cucumbers need special care to ensure a successful harvest.

In many regions, cucumbers are grown by starting with seedlings, particularly in colder areas, where sowing directly into the soil might not guarantee an early harvest. Using small biodegradable containers for seedlings is a good practice, as it minimizes root disturbance during transplanting.

How to Grow Cucumbers Successfully

Cucumbers are sensitive to root disturbance, so it’s essential to plant them in containers that don’t damage the roots. One seed per container works best, or you can plant two seeds and remove the weaker one once they start to sprout. After planting, place the containers in a well-lit area and water regularly, ensuring the seedlings get the proper nutrients.

Cucumber seedlings are ready for transplanting after 25–30 days, once they have a thick stem and a couple of true leaves. If you’re growing them in a greenhouse or under plastic sheeting, they can be moved to their final location a little earlier.

How to Calculate the Planting Dates

  1. Choose the Cucumber Variety The time it takes for cucumbers to mature varies depending on the variety. Generally, it can take anywhere from 35 to 52 days for cucumbers to start producing fruit:
    • Early varieties: 35–40 days
    • Mid-season varieties: 45–50 days
    • Late varieties: 50–52 days
If you’re planting early varieties, you can sow the seeds a bit earlier, while late varieties should be planted later.
  2. Growing Conditions Cucumbers need warm conditions, so daytime temperatures should be around 15-17°C, and nighttime temperatures should not drop below 9-12°C. If you’re using a greenhouse, you can plant cucumbers up to 3-4 weeks earlier than if they were grown outdoors.
  3. Lunar Calendar The lunar phases can influence plant growth. According to this, the best days to plant cucumbers in March 2025 are:
    • Best days: March 1, 4–5, 8–9, 31
    • Good days: March 13, 15–19, 23–24, 27
    • Neutral days: March 6–7, 20–22
    • Avoid planting: March 2–3, 10–12, 25–26
    • Not recommended days: March 14, 28–30

Example: When to Plant Cucumbers in March 2025

Let’s say you want to plant a late variety of cucumber, such as New Year Surprise F1, in a greenhouse in Moscow. This variety takes 50–52 days to mature, and you’ll transplant the seedlings 30–33 days after germination. In Moscow, you can transplant them in late April or early May. Since cucumber seeds take around 7 days to germinate, you’ll need to plant them in the second half of March. Based on the lunar calendar, March 31 would be the best day for sowing, but you can plant them on any day except March 28, 29, and 30.

Additional Tips for Cucumber Seedlings

  • Lighting: Cucumbers need plenty of light to grow well. If the weather is cloudy, it’s a good idea to supplement natural light with grow lights.
  • Watering: The best time to water your cucumber seedlings is in the morning. Avoid watering in the midday sun, as it can scorch the leaves.
  • Temperature: Cucumbers thrive in warm temperatures, so it’s essential to protect them from temperatures below 9–12°C.
